February 3, 2012 -- Pat and Janice Vinson, co-founders of Kids 'R' Kids International, announced Tuesday that Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies is the first national early childhood education franchise to be granted District Accreditation from the AdvancED accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seal. This means that the district and all of its schools are accredited, and that Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies are recognized across the nation as a quality school system, including our own Kids 'R' Kids of Grayson.

The district's accreditation is for a five-year term with regular monitoring of progress and reporting occurring during the term.

“District Accreditation as conferred by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission provides Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies a nationally-recognized mark of quality for our district and all the schools within our district,” shared Pat Vinson. “It demonstrates to the nation our commitment to excellence, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the families we serve.”

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, stated, “District Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school system on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

Kid Orange Tech provides educational solutions for 21st-century kids by supporting educators and parents in implementing technology responsibly into children's lives. We believe technology has the ability to enrich a child's life when used as an additional learning tool and is not intended to replace traditional play or an existing school curriculum. Also, the use of technology in the home can be an advantage to a child if educators can more easily communicate a child's learning goals so that a parent can reinforce what is being taught in school.

    Our Brain Waves™ Exclusive Curriculum

The first five years of your child’s life is a critical time when their brain is developing and brain cells are forming connections for learning and future success in school.

During these early years, the experiences and interactions your child has will determine which brain cells are activated and which ones are pruned away from lack of stimulation.

Your child’s learning environment has tremendous impact on brain development.
At Kids ‘R’ Kids, we use strategies from our Brain Waves™ curriculum to support neural pathways for language, social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development during these critical years.

Ten Important Brain Facts Parents Should Know

    1. The first brain cell is born two days after conception and two weeks after conception it is expanding at 500,000 cells a minute.
    2. At birth the brain will have 100 billion neurons, only 17% are activated.
    3. The brain activates from the bottom to the top and from the back to the front.
    4. Each brain cell has a short and finite time frame in which it can be activated. If the individual cell does not get activated within that time frame, it dies and will never be replaced.
    5. 80 billion of the 100 billion total cells are activated or die before the child reaches their 6th birthday.
    6. Each activated brain cell can maintain between 10,000 and 15,000 synapses or connections to other brain cells. Each cell we activate creates a huge multiplier effect on the future success of the child.
    7. The brain produces 800 neurological connections for every second it is properly stimulated.
    8. Repetition is key to brain development. The more times a child hears a correct answer the stronger the neural pathway.
    9. Social and emotional pathways are cemented after a single occurrence while things such as colors, shapes, letters and numbers require hundreds of repetitions to create the link.
    10. Newly formed synapses are very fragile. They get cemented during sleep. Enough sleep is absolutely critical for proper brain development.

Our BrainWaves Curriculum begins with activities specifically created to stimulate and activate brain cells in all four separate regions or lobes of the brain. These activities have been designed for infants, toddlers and pre schoolers. Our curriculum provides for the perfect mix of interactive play and materials to stimulate development through repetition and by utilizing all five senses.  Birth through age five is the most important time in your child's life for brain development. That development will be maximized through the activities we have developed in our cutting edge Brain Waves Curriculum.

Brain Development the Kids ‘R’ Kids Way

Our philosophy is “Hug First, Then Teach” as we understand that secure and safe emotional attachment is vital for the growth and development of your child’s brain. Our classrooms are filled with stimulating materials that allow teachers to facilitate children’s exploration through sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch as these sensory experiences send information directly to the brain and form the platform for healthy brain growth.

We understand that each child is unique, so our teachers cater to different interests and learning styles. From infancy, your child will be exposed to many forms of language (including sign-language), and immersed in an environment rich in language and literacy. Our learning stations are filled with math manipulatives, science elements, and stimulating visuals that support brain pathways for cognitive development. Problem solving is considered one of the best ways to support brain development, so our teachers conduct activities to help children explore cause and effect and employ questioning strategies that promote higher level thinking.

    Technology and the Brain

Technology is everywhere, so children need healthy exposure to be prepared for life in the 21st century. Research shows, however, that hours of exposure to digital technology can lead to over stimulation of the brain, fatigue, and irritability. At Kids ‘R’ Kids, we take a balanced approach to technology. Our curriculum has been integrated with ABCmouse, one of the latest early childhood technology tools, to enhance learning. With the guidance of a teacher, children engage in digital activities that build language, math, science, and fine motor skills.

    Maximizing your Child’s Mental Capacity

We believe in a nurturing learning environment, hands-on play, and novel experiences that ignite your child’s curiosity. With our exclusive Brain Waves™ curriculum and quality teachers, our goal is to provide stimulating experiences that support brain development and maximize your child’s mental capacity.

STEAM AHEAD™ at Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies

In keeping with our mission of being The First Step to Higher Education® and our all-important role of fostering 21st century learners, Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies is proud to introduce STEAM AHEAD. Armed with the knowledge that the fields of science, technology and engineering are expected to grow by leaps and bounds over the course of the coming years, we have developed an exciting new supplementary curriculum. STEAM AHEAD combines elements of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics to expand the way our students not only learn, but also how they think about the world around them. When used in conjunction with a strong foundation from Kids 'R' Kids proprietary First Class Curriculum® and the brain development power of our exclusive Brain Waves™ curriculum, there are no limits to the possibilities our students' futures might hold.
Imagine a little girl who not only dreams of being a princess, but also wants to devise the design of her castle. Or a little boy who hopes to become a race car driver on a futuristic race track of his own imagining. Children will always have dreams and imaginations, and programs like STEAM AHEAD tap into those amazing little minds of theirs to make the regular use of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics seem virtually secondary nature. STEAM AHEAD is another powerful example of how Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academies prepare our students for Kindergarten… and beyond.

    What is STEAM AHEAD?

    • Kids 'R' Kids STEAM AHEAD is an integrated project-based curriculum incorporating more science, technology, engineering, art, and math into students' everyday learning through play.
    • Written for preschool students ages three to five, STEAM AHEAD is designed to be used as a supplement to the Kids 'R' Kids core curriculum.
    • STEAM AHEAD provides students with opportunities to be innovative, creative, and inventive as they build strong foundations in five core areas of their education.
    • STEAM AHEAD activities and projects are hands-on and bring together many facets of what students find interesting in a way that packs educational “AH HA” moments.

    • Much the way Kids 'R' Kids station activities act as platforms for hands-on exploration opportunities, Kids 'R' Kids STEAM AHEAD allows students to learn by doing while developing problem solving and critical thinking skills.
    • Unlike academic learning of memorization with no logical or practical application, Kids 'R' Kids STEAM AHEAD projects encourage students to be natural scientists using reasoning, hypothesizing, predicting, and theorizing during the natural trial and error of play.
    • STEAM AHEAD activities enrich students everyday learning, support academic growth, and help inspire them to become lifelong learners.

    The Teacher's Role as Facilitator:

    • Teachers create high quality learning environments that provide students with opportunities to observe, question, investigate, predict, experiment, build, and share what they learn.
    • Students and teachers explore STEAM AHEAD projects together. To tap into each student natural interests while facilitating learning, project materials are placed in learning stations for independent and small group exploration.
    • Teachers serve as guides while students participate in STEAM AHEAD projects, making observations of each student's development, and interests all along the way.
    • In an effort to develop students as students engage in STEAM AHEAD projects teachers encourage them to ask, Why?
    • Teachers may choose a combination of some or all of the STEAM AHEAD projects to present depending upon their students levels of ability, interest, and development.

Our infant suite provides the highest quality care in an environment that is designed with the parent and child in mind. While in our care, children are stimulated through music, exercise, outdoor blanket time, facial and verbal mimicking, as well as lots of hugs and tickles.

Safety and health are our top priorities. We have separate rooms for babies, one for young infants and the other for older infants who are beginning to crawl. These rooms give the younger infants a protected environment and provide the older infants the freedom to explore more opportunities for developmental activities.

To help maintain the cleanliness of the room, our staff and parents wear foot booties to eliminate outside dirt and debris. We provide each child with a crib, clean sheet and blanket laundered daily, and a drawer for their personal items. Toys are sanitized as needed throughout the day as well as every evening.

Supplies provided by the parent include six to seven disposable diapers per day along with any needed diaper cream or powder, a change of clothes, and bottles filled with formula or mother's milk labeled with the child's first and last name and dated.

We give each child love and attention and provide parents with daily reports on feedings, diapering, and napping. Healthy growth and development is another top priority at Kids 'R' Kids Grayson. All our caregivers obtain First Aid and CPR training along with many hours of state required education to help ensure your child's well being. You will have peace of mind that your child is in good hands while at our Kids 'R' Kids school.

Toddlers are always on the move, excited and exploring the world around them! Kids 'R' Kids understands the curiosity and readiness of toddlers and creates a challenging and kid-paced day to fulfill these needs.

Our Kids 'R' Kids Infant-Toddler Program grows along with your child, building on previous knowledge and new challenges.

    Toddler Curriculum includes:

    • hands-on projects designed to stimulate the toddler mind
    • a structured learning plan designed to meet your child's developmental needs
    • problem-solving challenges and puzzles
    • a fun, safe play environment for personal discovery and adventure
    • a rich educational environment filled with science, math, language, drama, music, art and more
    • daily reports for you on the progress of your child, including updates on naps, toilet training and meals
    • close attention to each and every toddler to maximize personal growth
    • lots of hugs and giggles

    The Toddler Program

Our program works to strengthen all aspects of your growing toddler's development:

    • building language - Through additional sign language skills, your toddler learns to communicate with caregivers and other children so her individual needs are more easily met.
    • stories and songs - Exciting stories and an array of silly, fun songs help your toddler's imagination continue to grow while he learns those important skills needed for the next developmental level.
    • creativity - Our facilities are designed with imagination in mind. As your toddler develops, she will continue to explore her abilities in music, art, and drama with the help of our developmentally-appropriate learning centers in each classroom. Our state-of-the-art facilities encourage creativity and imagination.
    • fine and gross motor skills - With your toddler on the move, a busy body is a healthy body! Whether he is crawling, walking, reaching, or tossing, we help your child learn all about his body and celebrate his accomplishments both great and small.
    • social interaction - When children enter into the world of toddlerhood, they become aware of the world around them. We believe that healthy, happy children understand the importance of friendship and harmony with their teachers and peers. Kids 'R' Kids is designed to maximize friendly interactions between each child and her teachers, no matter the nationality, religious belief, or cultural differences.

    A Hug Above the Rest

We know that toddlers lead a very active lifestyle, and that is why our staff is prepared for the occasional boo-boo. We have developed a special place in our schools where your child can rest and receive the tender loving care she deserves. Our staff is highly qualified in First Aid as well as in “making it all better.”

A hug, a nod, an understanding smile, the comfort and safety of being with people who care—that's the Kids 'R' Kids difference.

The Kids 'R' Kids Curriculum for preschoolers provides children with an array of individual and small and large group activities. Each week children will explore a theme through group time introductions and reviews, daily enrichments, and additions to each learning center.

Preschool children are beginning to prepare for the elementary school years. As professionals, the teachers at Kids 'R' Kids Grayson provide a structured learning environment so each child will have a strong foundation.

Because preschoolers like to learn new information and have the desire to master new tasks, much of what your child learns will be through self-directed experiences. Throughout the day children will have the opportunity to explore the classroom's learning centers: Blocks & Building Design, Dramatic Play, Library & Literature, Math & Table Activities, Music & Movement, Sand & Water, Science & Discovery, and Writing Exploration. Learning through play in these clearly defined areas of interest promotes independence, fosters decision-making, and encourages hands-on involvement. Each learning center engages the child's core components of development: social-emotional, language, cognitive, physical and aesthetic. Kids 'R' Kids Grayson recognizes the importance of combining a well-designed curriculum with age-appropriate learning centers and understands how these two classroom components contribute to each child's development.

Our outdoor activities are planned to help extend learning to the outside classroom. Just as small muscle coordination is strengthened through puzzles, painting, and cutting, large muscle coordination is developed through outdoor play. Learning cooperation and team building through games and planned activities helps the preschool child understand effective physical and emotional management with his peers. Of course, sometimes just swinging and sliding are all children need to do, and we take care of that with our state-of-the-art and age-appropriate playground equipment.

Each child develops at his/her own pace, and we encourage communication between staff members and parents on the progress of their child. Daily reports or weekly newsletters from the classroom teachers update parents on activities, future class projects and field trips.

Kids `R` Kids Grayson offers both 4-year old Advanced Private Pre-Kindergarten and the GA Lottery Funded Pre-Kindergarten program. These programs are both state approved. We are very proud of the challenging and fun combination the Kids `R` Kids Curriculum offers.

As your Pre-Kindergarten student rises to Kindergarten, the choice is clear…
Kids 'R' Kids is here! Our Kindergarten program is enriched with a standards-based curriculum, wonderful learning stations, and an abundance of creative learning activities students will enjoy. It is based on national and state standards with weekly units comprised of academic lessons and literature-based activities. Our program's goal is to meet the needs of each student while implementing positive learning strategies.

The Kids 'R' Kids Kindergarten curriculum was designed for continuous educational growth. Our Kindergarten program was designed with six academic categories: social studies, science, language and literacy, mathematics, character development, and creative expression. Independent and small group activities develop and reinforce student understanding of the subject material. These activities also build independent and cooperative learning skills.

Literacy Activities help children build their language skills
Mathematics Activities develop children's understanding of number concepts as well as beginning arithmetic and problem-solving skills
Small Group Discovery provides daily enrichments and station enhancement

    • Art Station presents free-choice art opportunities
    • Construction Station develops spatial awareness through stacking, sorting, building, and recreating
    • Dramatic Play Station encourages individual and group role play activities with realistic and imaginary props
    • Library Station promotes independent reading and a love of books
    • Sensory Station allows children to experiment with a variety of materials

Kids 'R' Kids believes establishing a positive learning environment where children are “hugged first, then taught” will help them reach their potential and develop a love for learning.

In many families, both parents work, making after school programs critical during the school year and particularly during school holidays. For children ages 5 to 12, Kids 'R' Kids Grayson offers what parents are looking for - a safe environment for additional learning/study time and supervised activities.

Many families must choose a program that fits their child's year-round schedule as it pertains to elementary school, summer activities and holidays. Kids 'R' Kids Grayson uses a Monthly Idea Calendar that offers daily activity suggestions.

Our before and after school program offers the school-age child a welcomed break from the structured academic learning to a variety of Activity Zones to further enhance a child's creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. In our fun, productive and supervised environment each child also has the opportunity to develop special friendships.

By meeting with parents, our teachers can determine what each child requires after school. Perhaps an older child needs more help in order to complete homework assignments, or a younger child may need special tutoring in reading or math. This also is a good time to let the children learn more about computers, which are available at the center. But our teachers know that after a busy day at school, children need time to play. Supervised playgrounds are divided by age groups and give each child the chance to direct that special energy only children have. Plus, there is a separate game room for older children.

The Kids 'R' Kids Grayson school-age program is designed to extend your child's academic learning from the traditional classroom setting into our quality learning center.

Kids 'R' Kids Grayson provides transportation services to the following local schools:

Simonton Elementary, Starling Elementary, Grayson Elementary, Pharr Elementary, Cooper Elementary, Trip Elementary, Lovin Elemenary and Couch Middle School.

So Fortunate to Have Found Kids `R` Kids Grayson
As new parents living in a new city and state we feel so fortunate to have found the staff at Kids 'R' Kids Grayson in 2009. After visiting several other day care centers, we knew upon first greeting, that the facility and staff at Kids 'R' Kids would be the best choice for us. Now, over two years later, our infant son has joined his big sister at Kids 'R' Kids and we continue to feel grateful everyday for the expert care, comfort, and education they receive. Kids R Kids policy of "hug first" is especially comforting knowing that when we are not there to offer a soothing hug, the staff will be. We cannot say enough about the professionalism and dedication to excellence we have experienced at Kids R Kids Grayson.

    From Diapers to After-care
We have been with Kids 'R' Kids in Grayson since 2007. The transition to a corporate daycare from in-home childcare was not an easy transition for my kids. The staff at KRK Grayson knew this and were exceptionally welcoming when the boys first came. I truly believe that is what makes a difference at this facility...the family feeling surrounding it. This family run business has a family feel in everything that it does. Starting with the staff that greets you by name at the door, to the teachers, to the family events planned throughout the year. Our boys have literally grown up with Kid R Kids. From diapers to Pre-K, and now trusting hands after-school. We are very thankful for our extended family at Kids 'R' Kids Grayson. Great Foundation
Nothing comforts a mom more than knowing her children are in a safe, learning-rich childcare facility where everyone is loved and respected. I have been filled with that warm comfortable feeling for four years while entrusting the staff of Kids R Kids Grayson to be an extension of me during the day. As an educator and a mom, I firmly believe that children should be better each day due to the interaction with adults in their life. When I drop off Jordan and Taylor and head to work I do so with the assurance that their day will be great. Life long memories are being created in my girls` lives. From the hug Taylor receives every morning to the friends Jordan connects with every afternoon, my girls are happy therefore I am happy. As the girls progress educationally and continue through life I can confidently say Kids 'R' Kids was their foundation. Parent of a School-ager and a toddler

High Qaility Care at It`s Best!
Words cant express my gratitude for Kids R Kids. My oldest daughter started Kids R Kids at the age of 2 and she is now in first grade. That being said, my husband and I have always been very pleased with Kids R Kids. The teachers are highly qualified and very passionate/ loving to each and every child. The curriculum/activities that are planned for the children are accommodating to each of their levels. We were so pleased with Kids 'R' Kids, that we started our youngest daughter almost two years ago. Everyday that I drop off my youngest, I know that she is well taken care of and given unconditional love. She loves going into her classroom and knowing this, makes it much easier to leave her in the mornings. In conclusion, I highly recommend Kids R Kids to any parent looking for high quality care for their child. I especially appreciate the communication from the staff to the parents in keeping us fully informed about our children during the day and the love and support they show to us. We also feel that Kids R Kids is apart of our community. Parent of a 1st Grader and a Toddler

    Not just a day-care facility
KRK is not just a child care facility, it is a home away from home. It is a place where parents can leave their children and have complete confidence that the kids will be taken care of with love and structure. The piece of mind we feel when we leave our "little treasures" in the care and expertise of the center`s personnel is priceless. It really feels that everybody involved with our kids honestly care for the well being of the kids as well as ours as parents. The center also offers state of the art learning environment in which the children can develop the necessary skills required for school and life. I can honestly say that KRK are my extended family; the home away from home for my kids. I could not have asked for a better place for my kids to stay, grow, learn, but most important, have fun! Picking a place to care for and teach your child can make any parent anxious. Kids R Kids Grayson turned that anxiety into reassurance. The great teachers and staff make KRK Grayson such a wonderful place. The entire staff has made my daughter and I feel like a member of the family. We have been there for almost 3 years. My daughter loves all the activities they plan for her each day that often times when I pick her up she isnt ready to leave. As a single mother I feel secure in knowing that my child is being cared for and taught in a loving, safe, and academically enticing environment. Home Away From Home
Kids r Kids Grayson has been our home away from home! Choosing a daycare for our first child while living in a new area is one of the hardest decisions weve had to make and we absolutely could not have chosen a more caring and professional learning environment for our daughter, McLaren. Kids r Kids has been our blessing and we cant thank the staff and administration enough for all of their support and hard work in providing a facility that not only promotes quality learning, but quality care! As a parent, nothing means more than knowing that your childs needs are constantly nurtured. We are currently expecting our second child and I am very excited for him in knowing what he will have in store at Kids r Kids Grayson! Parent of a Toddler

If we had to use one word to describe Kids R Kids Grayson, we would use REMARKABLE. We have entrusted the Kids R Kids staff with caring for our son since he was two months old. The stress of having to work and leave our child in someone elses care was quickly alleviated with Kids R Kids. They have provided a safe and nurturing environment, while at the same time fostering his creativity and desire to learn. Parent of a Pre-K Student

    A Wonderful Change
My son Vincent has been at Kids R Kids and it has been a wonderful experience. My husband and I decided to change daycare facilities when we felt that the previous center didnt offer everything we were looking for. We wanted a place that would provide Vincent with the stimulation he needed as a one year old. We love the fact that Vincent is learning and that he most of all, has the nurturing that he needs. It is always fulfilling to see that all of the teachers hug and greet Vincent with such warmth. There isnt a day that he is unhappy to be at school. Simple things like having his nose wiped is big for us. We started to teach Vincent sign language when he was about six months and it is great that his teachers continued to build upon his skills. It amazes me when he comes home with a new word or he learns a new song. Some have asked, how do you know that he likes itwell sometimes he doesnt want to leave, that is a great indicator. Everyone is professional and helpful to us and they are always willing to help. If there is ever an issue, they contact me and let me know so I wont be alarmed and they are always thinking ahead and considerate of my time while I am at work. My family just welcomed a new son about a month ago and we continue to bring Vincent. Everyone is so helpful and offer me words of encouragement as I start a new level of parenting. We are thrilled that Christopher will be attending Kids R Kids Grayson in January. Carmen Robertson Parent of a Toddler and Infant

    First Time Parents!
We are first time parents and were very anxious about selecting the right day care for our son. We knew we found it when we toured the Kids R Kids in Grayson. The teachers and administrative staff have been wonderful. They take the time to answer our many questions we have and discuss transitions with us as our son grows and develops. The extra curricular activities and programs they offer to the parents have helped us in getting to know the teachers and staff better as well as seeing our son interact with them. As working parents, it is important that our son enjoys the daycare and learns as well as providing me with comfort that he is being well cared for during the day. We have been nothing but pleased with how attentive and caring the teachers are to our son. He spends quite a bit of time before he leaves the facility each day to say good bye and/or hug his current teachers and past teachers. Parents of a Toddler

    An Amazing School!
Kids 'R' Kids is truly an amazing school. My children spend their day with people who genuinely care about them, their well being and their education. I drop off my children to KRK every morning and leave for work knowing that they are in great hands. Even though I am not able to spend the day with them, I know that my children feel loved and are well taken care of daily. Both Alex and Ethan absolutely love going to school. And that speaks volumes to me as their mom. Parent of a Pre-K Student and a Toddler

    It is a blessing!!!
As a new parents my husband and I were very concerned when we were looking for a caregiver for our new baby Samuel. Coming back to work was really hard time for us, having to leave him with someone that we did not know produced a lot of anxiety and stress on us, specially because all our families are out the country. However and like a blessing,(I will always say this) we found Kids `R` Kids-Grayson, we can not be enough thankful of all the wonderful ladies that daily take care of Samuel. As a mother, I feel always supported and secure that my son is in the best hands when I am out at work. The love and care that he daily receives, is helping him to grow and develop quickly his milestones. Our families in Spain,Colombia and France enjoy every day to look him growing in the web cameras, and we have a lot of peace when we watch him from our offices. Other Programs

Help your preschooler develop a lifelong love of learning.

Kids `R` Kids Learning Academies has partnered with the amazing new early learning website ABCmouse.com to help support your child`s classroom education with engaging online learning activities that can be done at home or anywhere you can connect to the Internet!

Our students will be able to interact with this new program during their technology classes, plus parents will be able to try the program at home as of February 15th during a three month free promotional trail.

Through our partnership with ABCmouse.com, students will have access to more than 3,000 home-based learning activities in reading, mathematics, science, social studies, art and music, all correlated with Kids 'R' Kids proprietary curriculum, created in consultation with notable early childhood education experts. This will allow our families to easily and actively reinforce at home what their children are learning each day in the classroom.

Our Kids 'R' Kids curriculum is founded upon the educational theories of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and Sara Smilansky. These three educational theorists guide our decisions for age appropriate learning experiences for children. Our schools are designed so that children learn through peer and teacher interaction in a creative and safe environment as put forth by Vygotsky's theories of the development of the young mind. Our curriculum scaffolds teaching strategies for every classroom age grouping using Piaget's framework of proposed stages in a child's developing ability to learn. Finally, we believe in Smilansky's teachings of learning through play. Our curriculum includes a plethora of playtime both outside and in the classroom, giving the children the freedom to create and explore their world.

All of these child development theorists agree young children learn best by taking an active part in constructing meaning from the world around them. Another proponent of educational constructivism is the Montessori method of teaching. Though similar in philosophy to Vygotsky, Piaget, and Smilansky's methods, the Montessori approach to education has some unique differences. Listed is a comparative chart between Kids 'R' Kids'teaching philosophy and those attributed to the Montessori teaching method for young children.

This 'Sesame Street' episode can help you talk to your kids about Harvey

Hurricane Harvey & Helping Your Child Cope With Natural Disasters

On August 25th, Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast, bringing powerful winds and heavy rainfall with it. After days of non-stop rain, Houston and many other regions were left in shambles, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to walk away from what was once their home. While this devastation undoubtedly affects many people’s jobs, daily routines, and mental health, it is important to remember that children are affected as well.

It can be difficult for young children to grasp natural disasters and why and how they occur. Children cope with events such as this differently depending on their age, but they are all susceptible to its negative impact. Whether your child was directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey or not, these tips for coping with natural disasters are sure to help your family move forward no matter what you face in the future.

    Talk About It

One of the best ways to help your child process what has happened is by discussing the events that have occurred. Explain the disaster in logical terms so your child can fully understand why or how things have changed. Most importantly, allow your child to express his or her emotions about what has taken place, and listen to their worries or fears. By creating a safe space for your child to share their feelings, they will be less likely to bottle up or hold onto any negative emotions. A wonderful resource on how to discuss natural disasters with children can be found in this Sesame Street episode, where Big Bird’s friends help him rebuild his nest after a storm.

    Maintain A Routine

Your child can hold onto a sense of normalcy by maintaining their typical routine in whatever way possible. Try to stick with their normal bed/wake up time in order to ensure they’re getting enough sleep. Allow them time to learn and play, and stick with any rules you would enforce on a daily basis. Many parents feel the need to coddle children in the midst of a disaster, but sticking to a routine can provide a sense of safety and security.

    Be Patient

Remember – each child processes natural disasters differently. While one child may appear totally unaffected, another could display symptoms of anxiety or even depression. Be patient as your little one copes with how their life has changed, and know that it could take weeks, months, or even years for them to fully recover. Love, comfort, and patience go a long way when helping your child move past a difficult time.

It is our hope to raise $100,000 or more for all staff members and teachers whose homes, families, and livelihood have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Everyone makes mistakes. This goes without saying. If you’re human—and odds are good—then you’ve probably made a mistake or two along the way. Either way, one day you’ll have to communicate these mistakes to preschool-age child.

But how do you do that? How do you appear on the one hand to be the all-knowing, all-wise parent, yet on the other hand find yourself asking other moms and dads how they may have handled the situation. Rest easy. We’ve all been there.

Read “Parents Make Mistakes Too” on Atlanta Moms.

It’s almost hibernation time. When it’s the middle of winter, there’s nothing better than wrapping up with a big fat blanket and a tub of ice cream on the couch. We’re packing on the pounds and staying warm, and tossing our thoughts of summer in the sink with our ice cream spoon.

Instead of ice cream, though, children could use an extra boost of nutritious food during the holidays when they’re not at preschool. They’re filled with energy, and they need healthy food to convert that energy into precious nutrients their bodies need. They also need to expel this energy and nutrients in healthy ways, but sometimes it’s hard to play outside during the winter.

It’s your child’s first educational milestone – her preschool graduation! As you take hundreds of pictures, you can’t help but wipe away happy tears from your eyes. Your little one is growing up, and quickly! But is she ready for kindergarten?

Many parents of young children struggle with anxiety when it comes to their child’s educational and social preparedness for the next grade level. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of a new school, new teachers and new expectations for learning. You may be asking, “Does my child know all that she needs to know?” “Will she handle the transition well?” “How can I prepare her best for kindergarten?” To help you determine if your child is ready to step out of the preschool classroom and enter kindergarten, we’ve prepared a checklist for you. Use this checklist as a tool to test whether your child has mastered the skills necessary to step into kindergarten equipped for success. But, don’t worry too much if your child doesn’t get an A+ on the test. Progress is just as important as competence!

To view the checklist, read the full article here: Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten with this Checklist

As the grass dries out and the weather gets warmer, take your children outside to run around, play, and soak up the sunshine. There are many options for outdoor activities – but some of them take a little bit more planning and creativity. Here are a few outdoor activities that require very minimal planning and preparation.

Whatever you choose to do with your children, remember that quality time spent with them is more important than the activity that you actually end up doing!

    Plan a scavenger hunt.

Before you go out to your favorite park or nature area, make a list of items for your child to find or do when you get there. It can be as easy as “Find a tree with flowers on it,” “Find a dandelion,” or “Do 10 jumping jacks!” The goal is to keep your child occupied and active! If you want to encourage some healthy competition, set a timer and reward the child who gets done with the scavenger hunt first!

Pitch a tent and have a “camp out” in the backyard.

If you have a backyard, take your kids outside for a “camp out.” Pitch a tent, bring out some sandwiches and lemonade, and pretend you’re in the middle of a forest. When it gets dark, look for shooting stars, and maybe even tell spooky stories!

For more outdoor activity ideas, check out the full article here: Outdoor Activities That Are Anything But Boring

Spending time outdoors before it gets unbearably hot is a great option for some quality family time. Even if you have little ones, you can make an outdoor adventure a day that everyone enjoys. The best way to ensure a fun experience for your family is by planning ahead. Any time you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities in to one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted parent.

    1. Location, Location, Location – In the spirit of keeping it simple, have your outdoor adventure on familiar territory. If you are comfortable with the area, it will take a load off of your mind and allow you to enjoy the day more freely. When your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable to visit a new place, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Since toddlers and preschoolers always seem to have an inexhaustible amount of energy, it’s a great idea to collaborate with another family so that your children can play together. Not only will your children have a ton of fun together, you will also enjoy some adult conversation while they play – everybody wins! The great outdoors is the perfect place to allow your children to use their imagination, and bringing a friend is sure to create new, unexplored adventures involving space ships and castles and who knows what else!

For more tips, read the full article here: Tips for a Grumpy-Free Picnic with Kids

Earth Day is here and it’s a great chance to teach your child about the importance of taking care of the environment. There are several ways you can incorporate earth-friendly habits in to your life and one of the easiest is through recycling.

The first step to teaching your child about recycling is making it a fun experience! Since recycling involves sorting and containers, it’s the perfect set-up for a basketball game. Line up your recycling bins and have your children practice tossing paper, cardboard, and other lightweight recyclables in to the bin. If you have more than one child, try assigning a particular recyclable item to each child and have them go on a “treasure hunt” around the house and neighborhood looking for his/her specific recyclable item. Reward their efforts with a pre-determined prize (ice cream cone, day at the park, etc.) if they reach a certain goal.

For more fun ways to get your children excited about recycling, read the full article here: Teaching Kids the Importance of Recycling

Childcare centers may be readily available, but they are not all the same. Daycares have different educational philosophies and levels of experience. They hire staff differently, and vary in the amount of training required to give your child the best care possible.

The best way to find a leading childcare, daycare or preschool is to find the best location and take a tour of the facility. Before you spend the time taking a tour, here are 10 things to look for in a leading childcare, daycare or preschool:

    1. Accredited Preschool Curriculum

    2. Plenty of room for your child to play indoors and outdoors

    3. A philosophy of learning that includes fun activities

    4. Opportunities for extra-curricular activities

    5. A commitment to safety

For the rest of the items, read the full article here: 10 Things to Look for in a Leading Preschool

There are generally two kinds of parents – those who “wing it” and those who are particular about every particular thing. The particular parents tend to care about structure and are often strict about their child’s routines. The parents who “wing it” tend to respond to all their child’s demands in the moment and are flexible with routines.

While there is room for parents to be flexible about establishing boundaries and guidelines for their toddlers, routines help toddlers feel comfortable and secure in knowing there is certainty and predictability in their lives. As toddlers grow and develop, they need a strong sense of safety. Routines help toddlers learn how to interact with the world by doing the same things over and over again. The bottom line is that patterns help toddlers learn.

When there is routine and structure in the home, toddlers tend to be more calm and relaxed. Changes to schedules and routines can be particularly stressful for young children. It is not uncommon for a child who is used to mommy putting him to sleep every night to throw a fuss when the new babysitter tries to do the same thing. Changes in routine make toddlers uncertain and scared because they notice when something is different. Read the full article here: The Benefits of Routine for Toddlers

Have a Date Night with the Whole Family

When a child is born she immediately begins the process of learning and adapting to the world. Many skills come very instinctively to a child such as swallowing, eating, laughing, and crying. For the majority of a child’s life, however, she will need the help of others around her to explain important concepts and demonstrate healthy social skills.

One of the most effective ways to establish a solid educational foundation at an early age is by enrolling your child in an elite preschool or childcare facility. Learning can also be enhanced and encouraged at home as well and parental involvement plays a key role in making this happen. From making conversation to including your child in household chores, there are many ways you can invite your child into a learning experience.

Taking the time to understand what your child’s preschool teacher is teaching in class can also help you find creative ways to continue the learning at home. Your child will take notice of your interest in her education and may even find herself enjoying school more when you are excited about it too!
